A Home for Ukrainian Refugees in Italy — Now It’s Time to Bring It to Life

ENNA PROVINCE, SICILY, ITALY — For people fleeing war, loss, and constant stress, silence can feel unfamiliar at first. Here in the hills of Sicily, there are no sirens, no nightly alarms — only stillness, open landscapes, and the rare chance to finally exhale.

Across Europe, thousands of Ukrainians and other displaced families have found safety. But safety is only the first step. The real challenge now is helping people recover emotionally, regain stability, and rebuild a sense of purpose.

That is exactly what this center in Sicily is designed to do: not just offer shelter — but help people return to life.

A Place Where Recovery Begins

The HappyMind Center was created to restore something essential: a sense of grounding, dignity, and inner balance.

Its work is built around two core pillars.

The first pillar is healing through nature.

Simple things — walking through forests, breathing clean air, feeling safe outdoors — can have a profound effect on people who have lived under prolonged stress.

The surrounding Nebrodi region is one of Sicily’s most untouched natural areas. Rolling green mountains, quiet forests, and wide open skies define the landscape. On clear days, the majestic outline of Mount Etna rises in the distance.

This environment does more than comfort — it helps regulate the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and slowly restore a sense of belonging.

The second pillar is restoring purpose through meaningful work.

The center operates as a digital production hub, where Ukrainians can earn income and create online content that supports other displaced communities across Europe, the Middle East — including Syria, Iraq, Palestine, and Yemen — and Africa, including Sudan, Eritrea, Nigeria, and Somalia.

This is not just employment. It is a pathway back to self-worth, independence, and control over one’s future.

Architecture That Supports Healing

The center is housed in a historic early 20th-century stone building, provided by Italy as part of a regional revitalization initiative.

Architect Aurelia Alberti joined the project pro bono, driven by a belief that architecture can shape human recovery.

“For me, architecture is not just about buildings — it’s about people and their future,” she explains. “We are not simply restoring a structure. We are creating a space where life can begin again. Every design decision — from light to materials — is intentional. This place should give people a clear feeling: you are not lost. You can start over.”

Refugees as Partners, Not Beneficiaries

For Iryna Kolomoiets-Sultan, President of the “Made in Ukraine for Italy” association, this project represents a shift in mindset.

“It’s important to change the narrative Ukrainians are not just people in need of help. They are professionals, entrepreneurs, and creators who can contribute real value. We are building an economic bridge between Ukraine and Italy. This is a partnership where everyone benefits — people regain their footing, and local communities gain new energy and skills.

Ukrainian companies are already involved in the restoration, supplying windows and building materials.

For her, the project is ultimately about dignity:

“The most important thing is giving a person the chance not just to survive, but to feel capable again.”

Why This Matters Now

Forced displacement is no longer a temporary crisis — it is a long-term global reality.

The question is no longer how to help people survive, but how to help them rebuild — sustainably, independently, and with dignity.

HappyMind has already supported over 150,000 people through digital programs and partnerships with organizations such as Google Ad Grants, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), and the World Health Organization.

Now, that experience is being brought into a physical space — designed for deeper, longer-lasting impact.

How You Can Help

To make this center fully operational, support is needed:

            •          $100 — funds a full day of recovery in nature for one person

            •          $500 — provides a week of digital skills training

            •          $1,000 — equips a full workstation in the hub

            •          $5,000 — supports core infrastructure and programs

This Is More Than Aid

The building is ready. The vision is clear. The people are here.

What’s missing is the support to bring it to life.

In today’s world, the most valuable resourcae is not land or infrastructure — it is human potential.

And you have the power to help restore it.
