Flashbacks, intrusions

Flashbacks and intrusions are vivid, sudden memories of traumatic events that a person has experienced in the past. A flashback is similar to a temporary ‘immersion’ in the past: a person may feel like they are in that moment again. Intrusions are unwanted thoughts, images, or feelings that invade the mind. Both phenomena are related to the way our brains process stress. During a trauma, information can become ‘stuck’ in the memory. The activity of brain areas such as the amygdala (responsible for fear) reinforces these memories. Flashbacks and intrusions are common in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). To cope with them, it is important to seek help from a psychologist and work on psychological techniques and exercises.
